God’s covenant with Abraham

Abraham was known as Abram before God made a covenant with him.  Abram was obedient & wise enough to God so that HE could make a covenant with him, even I was thinking so for long time until I read Genesis 11:31 & heard some historical comments about Abraham’s history. The truth is Abram was not obedient to God’s voice at first like it said in Genesis 12 the first some verses that say Abram went out from that place as soon God commanded him to do so. The one who obeyed was really Terah, Abram’s father (will cover this topic separately in later posts). Terah came out of Ur taking Abram & all his family, but Abram did it from Haran later. Abram was not obedient & more over Abram was not a Jew. Then what a kind of covenant our Heavenly Father has to do with Abram…. The LORD said

I will build a great nation from you. I will bless you and make your name famous. People will use your name to bless other people. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse those who curse you. I will use you to bless all the people on earth. The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your descendants.”  Genesis 12:2,3,7

After God Himself spoke with Abram & made a covenant with him as it is in Genesis 15, yet Abram disobeyed God & didn’t obey His Words, he obeyed to the voice of his wife Sarai and took Hagar the servant girl as second wife, Hagar got pregnant & bore Ishmael.35-Abraham Abram was not true to God but God our Heavenly Father was so true to His Words & Covenant hence He appeared to Abram again & confirms His covenant with him.

HE changed Abram name to Abraham (father of many nations), also changed the name of Sarai to Sarah (mother of many nations).

Apart from that Heavenly Father confirmed that Abraham’s own son from Sarah (Isaac) will be the promised son & I will keep my covenant with him & his descendants & not with the servant’s son Ishmael. God made it very clear that the blessings & covenant will be carried forward to generations through Isaac & his descendants, prior God confirmed it by making a blood covenant with Abram (Genesis 15:17,18).

Well this is the kind of covenant that God made with Abraham, it followed through Isaac and now through Jesus we are under the covenant of our Heavenly Father with Abraham by trusting Jesus Christ, hence Paul wrote in Galatians 3:14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

The point to note with Abraham is, first he was not really wise enough & obedient to God’s voice so that HE establishes HIS covenant with him. Secondly, even after he was not wise & obeyed to his wife’s voice, yet God was true to HIS promises & words. Through Abraham our Heavenly Father wants to prove how good He is & how lovable He is with the whom He chose. Abraham might have done 100 things that were not right in the sight of God but in order to establish the covenant, all God wanted Abraham is to Trust in Him. That’s why Paul wrote in Romans 4:3 Abraham believed (trusted) God, and because of this he was accepted as one who is right with God.

The good news is still our Heavenly Father is true in keeping His promises what HE made to our father of faith Abraham, those promises are made available to us through the crucifixion of Christ Jesus. Hence we don’t need to do 1000 things in order to satisfy our Heavenly Father to be in the covenant & enjoy the everlasting Blessings of Abraham. The truth is we can’t do one thing to satisfy God but He has done everything to us. He gave His only Son hence He loved us & wanted us to enjoy the blessings He promised to Abraham. All we need to do is trust Jesus & His doing on the Cross for us and start declaring the blessing over us & our family in Jesus Name. Situations & our mistakes may prove that we are not worthy but declare that our God is so true to His Words & I believe Him, that’s why Psalmist said in 40:4  Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the man who makes the Lord his refuge and trust.   You can trust God to keep His Promises, you may fail but HE never fails.

So what is this blessing & what it do or make me?? And more about our father of faith in following posts.

Blessings of Abraham are upon you through Jesus.
